The interventions in the INSTRUCT trial are based on those in the recent Choice Disability trial interventions in Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland.

The INSTRUCT combined prevention package address three groups in quite different ways:

Workshops with young women: skills workshops and government structural support programmes to target women aged 15-29 years, especially those not in school or employment;

Beyond Victims and Villains: audio-drama offered to discussion groups of all ages and both sexes throughout each intervention district – it attempts to build an enabling environment for change in the community by making people more aware of gender violence, transactional sex and other aspects of HIV risk in Botswana;

Making programmes accessible: prevention services (includes churches, health care, education, poverty eradication, and other enterprise support programmes) concentrates them on those at risk of HIV.
